Taping for Swimming Puppy Syndrome
Swimming Puppy Syndrome is a condition where a puppy’s limbs splay outward, making it difficult to stand or walk normally. Kinesiology tape can be used to gently bring the legs closer together, offering a comfortable and effective aid alongside other supportive care.

Step-by-step application
-
Cut two “I” strips and remove the backing paper from part of each one.
-
Join the two strips together at the exposed adhesive sections to form a single loop, sized to fit loosely around the puppy’s legs.
-
Remove the tape from the remaining ends and attach the loop around the puppy’s legs, gently bringing them closer together without restricting movement too much.
Important precautions
- Have Swimming Puppy Syndrome diagnosed and monitored by a veterinarian – taping is a supportive aid, not a standalone treatment.
- Check regularly that the tape is not too tight and is not restricting circulation or normal movement.
- Check the skin is clean, dry and free of irritation before applying tape, and be extra gentle given how delicate puppy skin can be.
