Taping for Joint Pain in Dogs: The X Technique

The X technique is a quick, versatile kinesiology taping method for general joint pain, well suited to smaller joints such as the wrist (carpus) or elbow. Two “I” strips are placed crosswise directly over the joint to stimulate the skin receptors in that area, which can help ease pain through the same gate control mechanism used in other taping applications.

Step-by-step application

  1. Cut two “I” strips to a length that comfortably covers the joint with a small margin either side.
  2. Place the first strip directly over the joint, forming the first part of an “X”.

First I-strip placed over the joint to form part of an X shape
  3. Place the second strip crosswise over the first, completing the “X” over the joint.

  4. Choose the stretch level based on the goal. For pain relief, apply with a very light stretch (paper-off). If there is joint effusion (swelling within the joint), a light stretch can provide gentle compression.

Important precautions

  • Do not use extra stretch as a substitute for diagnosis – have persistent or worsening joint pain checked by a veterinarian.
  • Check the skin is clean, dry and free of irritation before applying tape.
  • For visible swelling around (rather than within) the joint, consider the Lymphatic cut instead, which is designed to direct fluid away from the area.
